IQ Contracting was awarded a contract from the City of Raleigh to repair and improve the wing walls associated with a historically significant railway culvert with several complicating factors to be considered. The project was located above the Rocky Branch Tributary, which is an important and restored blue line stream. Additionally, the project had to be completed in the winter, prior to the regularly scheduled train opening. Finally, there could be no shifting of the rails that would make the rail line inoperable when it came time for the train to resume it’s schedule. The repair itself was also complicated as it required 40’ galvanized steel piles to be drilled and then placed into the ground to rock and then lagging installed to support the soil under the rail line. The finish surface was precast concrete panels that IQ prefabricated at their shop and then set in place in front of the lagging when appropriate.
