Duke Escalator Removal

In an ongoing effort to improve the hospital, Duke Health contracted with Balfour Beatty Construction to remove an existing escalator at the hospital front entrance. The existing escalator was removed to make way for a new elevator and set of concrete stairs. IQ Contracting was responsible for the demolition of the existing concrete escalator runway/pit, the existing concrete stairs, existing slab on grade, and miscellaneous sawcut/demolition as required to install new work. IQ Contracting then installed a new concrete elevator pit, new slabs on grade, and a new set of structural elevated concrete stairs and support walls. The project work area was located immediately in front of Duke Hospital’s main entrance, so great care was taken to minimize disruptions to the hospital patients and staff, including working during the hospital’s off-hours (nights/weekends).
