Duke Health and Hospital constructed a new hospital bedtower that required backup power. Duke contracted with The Robins & Morton Group to construct a new two-story concrete frame building to house the backup generators and electrical equipment for the new patient bedtower. The project needed to be completed prior to the new Bedtower being completed, which resulted in several schedule accelerations to the project. The project site was located in a tight area with a single entrance, immediately behind the existing Duke patient bedtower and surrounded by occupied Duke Health buildings on all four sides. IQ Contracting was responsible for the cast-in-place concrete construction of this new “generator hub.” Concrete construction included large mat slab foundations, 28’ tall blindside concrete walls, 33’ tall columns, 24” thick elevated structural slabs, as well as installing removable precast concrete panels at the roof.
